    It happened in his third voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib, and Japan. After being chased by two pirates they were boarded about the same time by both of them.

    There was no ship in the harbour. The town is about as large as Portsmouth.

    Mr. Bates recommended Gulliver to be surgeon to the ship called Swallow. This was the name of a real contemporary ship which was among the vessels with which Sir John Hawkins conducted a profitable slave trade in Guinea in the 1560s’.

    Gulliver literally describes that he took shipping in the Downs in his second voyage, to Brobdingnag, on the 20th day of June, 1702, in the Adventure, which was the name of another real ship recorded several times in a number of London newspapers in August 1722.

    Gulliver was taken by pirates in his third voyage to Laputa, when after being chased by pirates his ship was overtaken and boarded. Laputa could be a satirical reference to the Hanoverian English Court and the British metropolis.
